A Maharashtra Forest Seed Centre has been set up at Nagpur in the year 1992. The
primary objective of this unit includes ensuring supply of good quality seeds of
forestry species for the planting programme by identifying and managing different
seed sources such as seed stands, seed production areas, seed orchards etc, seed
collection, treatment, certification and distribution. The unit is equipped with all
infrastructural facilities necessary for seed processing, certification and storage.
The proverb `we reap as we sow’ describes the importance of seed quality. The quality
seed ensures improvement in productivity of the plantations, output of the end
products, market acceptability of the products and reduction in quantum of seed
requirement. Towards fulfillment of above stated objectives, one more additional
seed unit is established at Nashik to cater to the needs of Western Maharashtra
Region.
